Lillian Jane Neal
Education: Bachelor of Science; Eastern New Mexico University
Artistically Self Taught
Personal Information:
My husband and I share three sons, a daughter, a granddaughter, and five grandsons. We live on the south edge of Sweetwater, Texas sharing our home with family and two large (Great Dane) doggies. I'm a retired school teacher of twenty nine years, now enjoying life as an associate pastor, flight instructor, missionary, worship artist, art teacher, and entrepreneur. My spare minutes are often spent in my back room studio, “Drawing in His Presence.” My husband is my best fan, my son is my best critic, and my doggies keep me company during those late night painting spells.
Artist Statement:
As a young child, I remember being more intrigued by the shapes in my crayon shavings than the crayon itself. I see shapes in clouds and the textures of walls and concrete. I think most of all I love color and texture and when they come together on canvas or silk in a way that stops someone in their tracks, satisfaction is reached.
My journey as an artist began (ten years ago) with a watercolor class. I still love the medium. I enjoyed a season of acrylic and mixed media, dyes, and inks. I am now very much enjoying the satisfaction of painting in oil and sometimes with cold wax added to it. Most of the time, I choose the medium according to the environment that I am painting in, which also dictates my style. Abstract expressionism and impressionism stir up my inner creative excitement. I try to either paint or sketch on a daily basis, and lately have taken up early morning ink drawings. I like to do those as I have my morning communion with the Lord.
Preparation begins with a powerful connection with God and his Word. Even when I’m not painting, I’m painting. I see things during prayer and worship or during those “nah-nah” moments of inactivity. I’m not afraid to experiment and I try to always have a canvas or substrate ready for inspirational moments. Sometimes, I’ll have something in mind when I paint (commissions), but most of the time I seek the Lord for a color to start with, turn on my worship music, and just play. My finished work has opened many doors for testifying of the goodness of God.
I continue to work and perfect my skill. I continue to rely and trust God to teach me and show me things of the Spirit. I paint because it’s like breathing. My hope is that with each painting, somehow you are drawn into a time of connection or decision point with the Creator.
